GVC (Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum)
A guaranteed and viable curriculum (GVC) ensures that all students have an equal opportunity to learn (OTL). Each student will have access to an effective or highly effective teacher, and access to the same content, knowledge, and skills in each section or class (Marzano, 2003)
How it makes an impact on students
-
A guaranteed curriculum assures us that specific content and skills are taught in a specific course and grade level, regardless of the teacher to whom the student is assigned. The idea being that every student learns the same “stuff” and the ability to be guaranteed such learning isn’t left to the luck of the draw of getting a highly effective teacher. A viable curriculum assures there is enough instructional time available to actually teach the content and skills identified as critical. The idea being there is enough time in the bell schedule, the overall school day, the academic calendar and in a student’s home life setting to allow for a thorough and deep understanding (dare I say mastery?) of the essential concepts and skills expected. What it looks like in our district
-
Our district works to use student data and achievement to set improvement goals and make tweaks to our curricular resources. By gathering input from teachers, bringing teacher teams together, and sharing curricular resources districtwide, we can guarantee that all students have access to high-quality curriculum. This can include a scope and sequence, assessment resources, subscriptions to platforms, and high-quality lessons.
